HALA WEAVER The Hawaiian is weaving with 3 to 4 feet long leaves from the hala tree (padanus). The tree is sometimes called screw pine. Hala was used to make baskets, floor mats, sleeping mats and to thatch houses. The sails of the Hawaiian outrigger canoes were even from hala.
